Not a checklist to pass, just a few honest questions worth sitting with before something new joins your closet.
Timeless
It's impossible to know where life takes you, right? So we only get to those few years if we invest.
Versatile
Can I make 1 to 3 outfits with what I own?
Fit
Is it flattering because it's right for me, or because it's trending?
Quality
Will the fabric and design allow me to wear this again and again?
Need
Does it fill a real gap, or repeat something I already have?
Lifestyle
Will I realistically reach for it, given the life I actually live?
Color
Does it fit my color palette, what I already own, and what suits me?
Cost per wear
Will I wear it enough times to make the price feel fair?
A Few Notes From Experience
What tends to last
An ivory cashmere sweater or a white tee. Straight, dark-wash jeans. Black leather ankle boots. A neutral wool coat. A leather bag that you love and own for years maybe. A piece you love and reach for every time you go out, no matter how crazy it is, it’s your signature, so it stays! But one per category. Pieces that answer yes to nearly everything above, and keep answering yes for years.
What tends not to
The trend-driven statement shoe. The logo-heavy novelty piece, I know it’s trendy, and it’s screaming this to everyone: look at me! Whatever silhouette is having its moment right now. Reach for these on purpose, not on impulse, and know that’s allowed too.
